IntroductionAs part of my course work here at the NWRC I had to make a social action video. With my team I choose the Foyle Hospice. As part of this project I interviewed various people connected with the hospice to get an overall picture. I researched the work of the hospice to begin with by looking at their website (www.foylehospice.com) and reading through the Foyle Hospice News (their autumn/winter newsletter in 2014). I also visited the new chief executive Donall Henderson to get some ideas and discussed the project with members of my team (Jamie Keys and Ryan Murphy). I then planned out my interview questions (see appendix one for full list of questions) which I asked in interviews with members of staff. These interviews were cut into the social action project but I also made up three interviews for this assignment. 1. A video interview with Donall Henderson, CEO of the Foyle Hospice 2. A radio Interview with Michelle Kosky, who runs the Healing Hearts Project and 3. A written Interview with Sharon Williams who is the volunteer co-ordinator at the hospice. Video interview |
These are the questions I had prepared and sent to Donall before the videoing was to take place. 1. What does the hospice do? 2. You have recently become the Chief Executive officer for the Foyle Hospice, What are your first impressions of the place as you settle into your job? 3. The hospice is celebrating its 30th birthday soon, what difference do you think it has made locally? 4. What are it’s achievements so far? 5. What are your priorities for the hospice now? 6. I know the hospice is well supported by the local people through fundraising and volunteers, Have you any message for the local community? The idea of these questions was to get a fresh view of the work of the hospice, its achievements and its plans for the future. As Donall is fairly new to the job, he would have a fresh perspective. It would also be an opportunity for the new CEO to acknowledge the valuable contribution of the volunteers and the support of the local community. As the hospice wouldn’t be able to run without the work of the volunteers and the fundraisers, the video is a good opportunity to say thank-you. The questions were open ended and gave Donall a chance to put his across what he wanted too. I made a video of the interview with Donall which you can by clicking the button -> You can see that I didn’t use all the questions as there was a lot of talking and it would have been too much. I cut the interview with shots of the hospice at work to make the interview more interesting to the viewer. I had shown Donall the questions in advance and you can see him looking down toward the notes and perhaps it might have been more interesting and fresh if I had asked him the questions without so much preparation. Making this video was a useful learning tool as I learned not to interview someone with a window behind them. I also learned to always try and keep the mic at the same distance so the audio levels will stay the same, as i had to fix the audio when editing as it was different. Radio InterviewMichelle Kosky is the children and young person’s facilitator at the hospice. Her job is to support young people who has had some-one die and help them to come to terms with it. I was interested in highlighting Michelle’s work at the hospice as being young I felt that our video would be more likely to appeal to younger people and it would be a good thing to let people know that this service is available. I hadn’t known this myself before my research. Here are the questions I had prepared for Michelle. 1. Hi Michelle could you explain what you do here? 2. I am sure children respond differently to a death in the family. How might a young person or a child feel or act when they have lost a loved one? 3. How would a child get support or help from the hospice? 4. How do you help them? 5. What would you be hoping for a young person who uses your service? Interviewing Michelle was to highlight services to young people who had been affected by bereavement. Questions asked were to explain the process so young people who use it will know what to expect and will show the journey from confused or grieving to be able to move on with their life. This was my first attempt to create a radio interview and I used voiceovers to top and tail it. I had to use the material I had already taken. The interview does let you know the work of the hospice but you can tell that it was cut together and this takes away from the feeling of a live interview. It does however tell what the project is and does. |
Text InterviewThis interview comes from the questions I asked to Sharon Williams who co-ordinates the volunteers at the hospice. These were the questions I asked her for the social action project. 1. How many volunteers do you have and what kind of things do they do? 2. How important is the work of the volunteers to the hospice? 3. How do people volunteer? 4. Do they need to know how they can be of use or can you help them find an activity? 5. What do you think the volunteers get out of working at the hospice? 6. What would you like to say to any-one who may be thinking of volunteering here? |
